Porsche RS Spyder Coming?

I know people want to see more Carrera GT related posts. For some reason, I don’t have a huge interest in the GT. Maybe it’s because I’m still stuck in the 80’s and the 959. Guess it’s time to man up, get rid of the mullet and give the Carrera GT some serious thought.

For today though, I have something to whet your appetite a bit. A possible replacement supercar for the Carrera GT: the Porsche RS Spyder. Of course it isn’t going to look like the car above (can you imagine taking THAT to the store for some milk?!), but hopefully it will be based on the racing technology Porsche has honed in the RS Spyder turning it into a winning platform the last few years.

Here’s what we’re reading about the new RS Spyder:

  • Mid-engined – It will likely have less power than its predecessor though
  • Twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V8 producing around 480 hp – A brand new engine for Porsche
  • ZF-developed 7-speed dual clutch transmission
  • A new carbon-fiber monocoque chassis may be used
  • Anticipated weight of 2,200 lbs
  • Production run should result in larger numbers of cars over at least a 5 year period
  • Production line at Porsche’s Leipzig factory where the Carrera GT was once built will be used

Some serious machinery to be sure. Most likely geared towards the serious track dayer or “committed owner” (translated rich people).

Original release date had been rumored to be in 2012, but with the bumps in the road with VW among other things, questions are looming around it’s possible readiness by then. Some sources say Zuffenhausen is claiming the car is extremely advanced in development and may already be in the test mule stage.

  3. ryan,

  4. oh, and yes the 959 was an amazing car but if you really start watching some videos about the carrera gt i think you start getting turned on by it too

I know what you mean, Sentiment for the past closes your eyes to the new…But the Carrera GT is too much Porsche to ignore and with plenty of traditional cues….and who says you have to cut your mullet? ! 🙂

  6. Thanks for the translation Ryan – I thought for a second that I might have to pick one up. Turns out I’m not qualified after all. 🙂

And yes, I would absolutely drive that thing to Albertson’s to pick up the milk.

  7. I would love to see a new GT and that pic of the racing Porsche is cool too. Maybe by the time the GT comes out I will be of the ‘committed owner’ status. Haha.

  8. we can hope.

  9. Ha, that would be awesome

  10. when the GT’s first came on the scene, I was fortunate to see two of them in the same place – the Porsche Corral @ Sebring – I submitted a few pics of them for the gallery. It’s a very un-traditional Porsche, but it’s a great example of what they can do when they color outside of the lines.

  11. 7 speeds now, The spread of ratios has to make use of everything the engine has and you wonder if the 7th is direct. Amazing.

  12. What are we hoping for LAR?

  13. that it is produced,andrew
