1989 Porsche Speedster

This is one of those cars that would have gone on my Ultimate Car List had I had the room. I’ve always had a fascination with the 911 Speedsters. I love the primarily open air version of the 911, the flared rear fenders like the 911 Turbo, and the raked windshield. It gives the car such a hunkered down bad boy look.

Course, this is also one of those cars that would be tough to own due to it’s collectible status. Not only will it be increasingly tough to find a good example, but the price should continue to move up nicely. The real rub is whether or not you could drive and enjoy a car like this. I’d constantly be worried about it being in the parking lot, getting rock chips, etc. There were only 2,100 of them made and only 800 made it to the US.

Still, be an amazing car to own and this particular one is in exceptional condition. It has just over 28k miles and the owner mentions it being near perfect in every way. Sounds like a bit of a collector, with the collector’s attitude to go along with it. Check out his ad:

I DO NOT THINK YOU WILL FIND ANOTHER THAT CAN MATCH THIS CAR FOR ANY PRICE ANYWHERE. MY BUY IT NOW PRICE IS MY BOTTOM LINE PRICE. IF THE CAR DOES NOT SELL IT WILL BE RETURNED TO MY LONG TERM COLLECTION. DO NOT MISS OUT AS I WILL NEVER OFFER THIS CAR AGAIN IN MY LIFETIME.  AND IT WILL NOT BE SEEN AGAIN BY THE WORLD.

Guess when you’ve got the cash to collect cars like this, you can do and say about anything you want. It’s currently at $34,100, but his reserve is somewhere nearer the $55,000 range. He wasn’t specific about it, just said he’d had offers above $55k.

A car like this is definitely on my list to own someday. Maybe one that’s been driven a bit that I could enjoy without worrying about rock chips, door dings, etc.

  1. I’v never been a huge fan of cabriolets, however the speedster is one of the exceptions. (along with that pretty little carrera 😉 ) And you have a really good point with the collectability factor. I’ts almost a shame to let something like that be exposed to “normal wear and tear” the way i see it a car is meant to be driven, not just looked at. on the other hand, i wouldn’t mind knowing the owner on a first named basis so i could see his car all the time.

  2. can i have a link to the ad ?

  3. He seems pretty adamant about this thing not being for sale again what with the CAPS LOCK on and all. Seriously though – if you’ll never entertain the idea of selling it in the future, why is it up for sale now? Not to detract from the beauty of the Speedster (because it is one gorgeous car and I think we’d all agree – not really debatable), but I find the tone of the ad a bit silly. But I guess, as you pointed out Ryan, that if you have the kind of money to have a long term collection that would include this car, buyers are sort of at your beck and call – not the other way around.

  4. That is a sweet looking Speedster and if you say it is worth the money I better go ahead and buy it before he puts it away in storage forever.

  5. I have no lengthy jawboning about how awesome this car is because i`m drooling profusely lol

  6. I swear – since I’ve been coming to this site I haven’t gone a single day without seeing at least one Porsche on my drive into work. I never realized how many of them there were driving the streets in Portland. Good to see – makes my mornings a little more fun looking out for them.

  7. I first saw the 911 Speedster in the movie Waynes World 2. Christopher Walken drove it and she was a beauty. SchaaaaWiiing.

  8. It looks like it ended without selling. The bidding made it up to $45,310 but the reserve was not met.
I think it’s funny after how adamant he was that he added this little note:

On Jul-23-09 at 12:49:34 PDT, seller added the following information:

WE HAVE LOWERED THE BUY IT NOW PRICE. I DO NOT THINK YOU WILL FIND A NICER SPEEDSTER FOR THE MONEY. DO NOT MISS THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY.

There was another 89 Speedster – almost identical w/ 85k miles that bidding hit $50k on and reserve was not met either.

  9. sounds like “the disney vault”.buy it now or you will never see it again.

  10. I’m kinda surprised it went for 55k, I’ve seen Speedsters way higher than that

  11. Didn’t realize there was that few made. Someone just got a sweet rig today 🙂

  12. Incredible car, but clearly after what Andrew noted…I think this seller is really wearing a plaid sport jacket and white shoes 🙂

  13. mitchell says

i think its interesting how the owner’s love for the car seems to effect what he thinks the price of it should be – no matter what others are willing to spend. i guess thats the irrational human mind at work…

im normally not a huge fan of white either, but this one looks good.
is that in FL? white seems appropriate down there.

  14. This guy thinks he has James Dean’s spyder.

  15. love the lower windshield!car looks sweet.

  16. nice speedster, but I wish it was black or red

  17. there’s actually a version of this Speedster from the same era w/ the 3.2 motor that had the narrow non-turbo body style, they only made 171 of them (I’ve never even seen a picture of one), they draw crazy money, but I don’t think they would look as nice as this body style.

  18. @rb – read my post from 10:14

@mitchell – I don’t think he’s too far off on his asking price. There was another one (almost identical but w/ higher mileage) that the bidding reached $50k+ on and the reserve was not met so I don’t think mid $50’s is unreasonable (maybe just not in this market).

  19. I don`t know Phil, White makes this ride pretty sweet!

  20. @Andrew – I was actually in contact with the seller. I’m 95% sure it ended up selling outside the auction for around $55k.

  21. That does look like a pretty sweet ride for the price. Nice to know there were so few made and what to look for if we ever decide to purchase one.

  22. Nice deal for. Whoever ended up with it.

  23. this tops my ultimate porsche list. just looking at one gets my heart pumping

  24. @Ryan – thanks for clearing that up. You’d know far better than I. I was just going by the expired auction posting. That $55k mark seems to be a fair price. Especially for one with only 20-odd thousand miles on the odometer.

  25. speedster plus fuchs = love

  26. what was the final outcome? did he sell it, and how much did he get?

  27. if it sold, hope new owner enjoys it.if not, sure we’ll see it for sale again despite what owner says.

  28. George Rowland says

I have never even driven a Porsche, but I would love to.

  29. emm… luv it ))

  30. Radioactive says

Realize this is an old post, but did that 911 Speedster ever sell? I have one that I’ve kept as a collectable, it’s in triple black, 10K miles.

    • @Radioactive – That’s a good question. I’m sure it did. Gorgeous car. Would love to pictures and hear some of the story of your car if you’re ever so inclined. Readers would love it.
