2011 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid

I love the opening line of a post about the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid on GreenCarReports.com: “Hell is freezing over pretty frequently these days, it seems.” Kind of feels like that for us Porsche fans in recent years. Diesel this. Hybrid that. 4 door 911.

Porsche worlds are colliding all over the place!

It looks like the 2011 Cayenne Hybrid is going to start hitting dealers late in 2010. It’s supposed to get 26 mpg according to German Automobilwoche. Here are a few reminder points that make this SUV pretty amazing:

  • Direct-injected, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine
  • 333 horsepower
  • 221 lb-ft of torque from the electric motor ALONE
  • Tuned to give maximum electric assist at highway speeds (unlike most hybrids tuned for city driving)
  • Claimed all-electric running at speeds up to 86 mph
  • 0 to 62 in 6.8 seconds

Price hasn’t be set yet for the Cayenne Hybrid, but it’s expected to be in the $125,000 range.

I’ve long loved the idea of the hybrid. Even though the Prius is a bit on the ugly side, it seems like the gold standard for hybrids. At one point I wanted to buy a Prius, double the battery banks and mod it to get 100+ mpg. For some reason the Prius appeals to the techie side of me. So the Cayenne Hybrid, especially when they start talking about speeds up to 86 mph on battery alone, is pretty enticing. Course, if I was going to consider a Cayenne, realistically it would take a Turbo to get me into the driver’s seat.

  1. 86 on electric?that’s great!

  2. sweet!don’t go over 86m.p.h.very often anyway.

now the green minded celebs wont have to feel guilty driving a more prestigious vehicle – which is fine, because they really look quite pedestrian in their priuii (priuses, as it were)…

  4. mitchell says

hmm, maybe that would be prii , lol

  5. Wow, these numbers are amazing.

  6. All these Cayenne posts lately have me warming up to the Cayenne quite a bit.

  7. I pulled up behind a couple of Cayennes yesterday, they actually don’t look to bad when your up close. They look nothing like a Porsche, but that’s another story.

  8. not on my top 5 list

  9. so do you think law enforcement would allow us to cruise at 86 mph on the freeways because we would be saving gasoline??

  10. The numbers all look pretty good and I was thinking yeah, maybe I could see myself in one of those. Then the price of 125k, wow, maybe not.

  11. Good performance out of a Hybrid. Don’t like the color, or the fact that they are making hybrid Porsches now, but I guess everyone has to do it nowadays. Not a big fan of the price either.

  12. going green in style.

  13. hybrids aren’t all bad.

  14. over time the technology will help the price of hybrids come down in price or there won’t be other options and we’ll have to adjust to the prices.

  15. Just wait 5 years and the hybrid technology will be better and the price will come down. Same thing with electronics, just wait and you usually get a better product for less.

  16. I don’t much care the look of this hybrid

  17. Agreed with Jeff W. Looks appealing until seeing the sticker price.

  18. That’s right Jeff. I’m almost ready to move on one of those mobile telephone contraptions that all the newspaper and radio commentators keep reporting on.

  19. Phil Schneider says

I really don’t have any interest in any SUV, but
it’s nice that folks are continuing to research and
    implement hybrid technology.
