Porsche Entering Formula 1, Or Not?

I’ve read quite a bit about this over the last nearly two months and I’m wondering what the general consensus is. Many sites claim Porsche is entering Formula 1, but I haven’t seen anything recently. I’m also wondering how the potential issues with the VW merger may impact Porsche’s ability to pull if off. Not that they necessarily need VW to make it happen.

James and I had a little thread about it a month ago that I’ve been thinking about. He suggested Porsche may opt to be an engine supplier giving them the ability to partner with a top team. This would, in effect, bring them to table without ponying up the $300 million or so to field their own team.

It’s gotta be tough to justify huge dollars for a questionable positive contribution to the bottom line. Especially with the state of the automotive economy.

What does everyone think? Is Porsche headed to F1? Should Porsche even be considering it? I’m curious to hear what you have to say.

  1. Porsche should definitely be considering it but at the same time I am not sure if it would be a worthy investment for them in terms of return.. I mean Porsche is already a real recognizable name… so what could they really gain from it? Plus there are already some established names in F1 like Ferrari, Mercedes etc.

    Till then,

  2. F1 is the pinnacle of car racing, I personally would love to see the Porsche brand back in F1.

I think the best way would be to develop an engine and gearbox and allow an existing team to use it, maybe taking over part ownership at a later date.

The Sauber F1 team would be an ideal partner.

  3. The more I think about it I agree with Paul, although I think Peter Sauber might be a little wary after the whole BMW fiasco. Maybe partner with Williams or Mclaren for a couple of seasons then buy into a smaller team.
